The airline industry is reeling these days, both from the high and climbing prices of jet fuel, as well as from a lot of bad publicity about the aviation industry’s contribution to global warming.
Boeing hopes its new plane the 787 Boeing dreamliner will silence some of the criticism of the airline industry and delight airline executives with it’s forward thinking engineering that has resulted in an incredibly fuel efficient airplane.
This is great news for operators faced with enormous costs at the pumps. Gas prices have climbed to near record levels and the 4.50 a gallon that jet fuel is hovering at has taken its toll on aviation profits.
Boeing’s new planes will save up to 20% of the jet fuel used by current jet liners of an equivalent size. A 20% savings in jet fuel is a 20% increase in profits, and the news of the super efficient plane has been creating a buzz amongst industry insiders eager to see the first of the new planes due to be unveiled on July 8th; and Boeing has even received almost 600 pre orders for the first totally re designed plane in a decade.
Boeing credits the new plane’s fantastic fuel economy to new engines designed by Rolls Royce, which contribute about 30 percent of the 20% reduction. The remaining fuel savings are from the use of light weight composite materials in the construction, more efficient systems and improved aerodynamics.
This new plane is set to do a lot to increase the credibility of an industry that had been talking an environmental sensitivity, but as of yet, has produced little to silence critics. Jet fuel costs are expected to continue rising, and any fuel savings will surely be noticed by airlines selecting their next generation of aircraft. With Boeing’s latest offering, both those outside the industry and those within are sure to be happy.
