Airbus Newest Member Of The UN Global Compact

May 28, 2007

The UN global compact is a UN initiative that brings businesses together with other UN agencies on the areas of civil society and governance, in an effort to enhance human rights and labor efforts.

The compact was launched in 2000, and membership within the compact is a voluntary corporate initiative. Members agree to promote good corporate global citizenship and offer fair and effective business solutions to the problems that have emerged as business globalizes.

Airbus President explained their membership into the group as ""Airbus is a global company and signing the Global Compact is an important milestone in our responsible approach to our global business. The full integration of environmental and social considerations into our business is vital to the sustainable development of our sector,"
The compact now has well over 3000 participating businesses in more than 100 countries throughout the world. The compact is the largest ever volunteer corporate citizenship promotion initiative.

Air transport is a keystone factor in the global economy and the globalization of business. The air transport business generates 8% of the worlds GDP and a staggering 29 million jobs. The airline industry is in the media spotlight on items such as climate change, and the airline industry is held accountable for 2% of all man made greenhouse gas emissions.

This low emissions rate is accredited to improving fuel economy technologies that have made today’s aircraft 70% more fuel efficient than aircraft 40 years ago.
