China And Boeing Working To Expand Chinese Air Routes

May 30, 2007

China Eastern Airlines today flew a Boeing into Linzhi airport in Tibet, to demonstrate a new and advanced aircraft navigation procedure.

The procedure, known as RNP, uses modern avionics technology such as GPS, and a new set of procedures, to increase the safety of flying in challenging terrain, and or in intense weather conditions.

The FAA, the Chinese CAAC, Boeing and Chine Eastern Airlines have been working together to develop new air traffic routes throughout China. The RNP procedures have been developed and designed by Jeppeses, which is a Boeing owned company.

The flight was used to demonstrate China Eastenr’s mastery of the new procedures, and is a crucial step into future commercial flights into the airport located at high altitude.
Boeing Vice President, Chet Ekstrand, commented, "I’m pleased that the Boeing family continues to build on its long history of partnering with the Chinese government, regulatory agencies and airlines to advance aviation in China."

The new procedures allow for safer flying into difficult and less accessible regions of China.
