Private Jet Charters Expensive Perk or Productivity Tool?

June 8, 2007

Private jet charters as a business are booming, as business executives grow weary with security checks and inconsistent departure times.   The fast growing demographic comes from China, Russia and India as their economies are getting better and their terrains are difficult to travel by means other than aircraft.  In fact last year was the first year ever to have more private jets ordered by companies outside the North America.

Although typically thought of as an extravagant perk, private jets can actually save companies money by better maximizing their executives’ time.   Especially in Europe where the average business trip is less than 300 miles and waiting in security often takes longer than the flight.

Sometimes the lines get blurred between what qualifies as "business travel" Increased reports of personal trips being taken and families being brought along on professional business have raised quite a few investors’ eyebrows.

As more companies purchase private jets for their executives, environmentalists are questioning the effect on the planet.   Similarly, stockholders wonder if private jets are really a productivity essential or just another executive luxury.  This has caused the jet manufacturing industry to closely guard the names of any and all customers. Some companies have actually dropped their private jet travel as a way of proving their commitment to cost cutting.

Mr. Dranitze at NetJets firmly states, "Few people are doing this because the seats are more comfortable…They are trying to maximize the time they spend with their work and their loved ones.
