Airbus has recently partnered with Pratt & Whitney (P&W) to develop future technology options. The airline is currently conducting flight tests to evaluate the ‘PurePower’ PW1000G technology engine, which features P&W’s patented Gear Turbo Fan (GTF). The tests are being performed at the Airbus flight test facility, using the A340.
Airbus is also coordinating with leading engine manufacturers to evaluate fuel burn and CO2 emissions.
In Toulouse, one A340-600 (a test aircraft) has been extensively used for state-of-the-art technologies. As asserted in the Airbus press release, it “is already equipped with a full set of flight test instrumentation, and since Airbus has full understanding of the aircraft’s aerodynamic performance, it can easily assess the benefits of new technologies when integrated into the airframe.”
Airbus continues to be a leading developer of aircraft engines. This current effort will reel in more profit for the company in the near future.
