TSA wants to regulate private jet passengers

October 24, 2008

Private jet passengers would have to pass background checks before boarding under a new proposal from the Transport Security Administration (TSA).

TSA is seeking to impose stricter security requirements on 15,000 corporate jets and 315 small airports, which currently have no security protocols on corporate flights. Corporate jets are as threatening as commercial planes, as TSA said, “… they could be used effectively to commit a terrorist act.”

It would be “an important milestone,” commented Michal Morgan, TSA head of aviation security. Morgan continued, “It’s the evolution of security into a new operating environment.”

If approved, the new 260-page security protocol will be effective by next year. TSA estimates that it will cost the institution $200 million/year for maintenance, of that amount 85% will be paid by private jet passengers.
