Five dead in crash of business jet in Belarus

(October 27, 2009)

A private jet crashed late Monday near Minsk, killing the three crew members and two passengers aboard, Belarusian Transport Ministry officials said. The mid-sized aircraft, a British Aerospace BAe 125-800, was owned by private Russian charter carrier S-Air. The dead included a top executive of the airline. "We have found one of the flight recorders, and we are still looking for the reserve one," said Vadim Melnik, a Transport Ministry spokesman. "It is not clear what caused the crash; there is a wide variety of possible reasons." Rescue workers had uncovered the remains of all five persons – four men and one woman – who had been aboard the flight, he said. The airliner’s crew reportedly made an initial attempt to land, canceled the approach and, on making a second approach, disappeared from airport radar. The plane’s pilot, Aleksander Samoilov, had more than 28 years’ of flight experience with more than 11,900 hours of flight time logged, of which 1,450 had been at night, the Belapan news agency reported. Samoilov had been piloting BAe-125 corporate jets since 2007 and had undergone crossover training at a British Aerospace flight schools in England and the United Arab Emirates. The twin-engine aircraft went down in a forest and tore a path about 250 metres long through trees until coming to a stop in flames about 4 kilometres from the airport, according to eyewitnesses. Visibility had been excellent at the time of the apparent accident, news reports said. The plane had taken off Monday evening from Moscow for Minsk. The passengers had planned to visit a upmarket casino recently opened in the Belarusian capital by Russian entrepeneuers, Melnik said. The casino’s operator, a Belarus-registered firm identified in news reports as the Shangri La company, chartered the plane. The air charter company S-Air is registered in the central Russian city of Kaluga, with its headquarters at Moscow’s Vnukovo airport. Aircraft currently operated by S-Air include seven Soviet- manufactured passenger planes and now three UK-produced BAe-125 corporate jets. British Aerospace manufactured the BAE-125, a mid-range jet with a 10-person capcity including flight crew, from 1977 to 1993. The plane currently is built by Hawker Beechcraft under the name Hawker 800.

Jet Lag Study Includes Private Jet Trip To Paris

(October 26, 2009)

Pharmaceutical companies are always looking for two things – people to participate in their clinical trials and new ways to market their products, but it is important to point out that clinical trial recruitment is never associated with marketing programs. Cephalon, an international biopharmaceutical company dedicated to the discovery, development, and commercialization of many unique products including central nervous system disorders makes a drug called Nuvigil. As reported in the Daily News, ads started appearing with the following question:  "Want to fly to France and get paid $2,500 for your trouble?" Cephalon conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial of 427 patients with excessive sleepiness associated with jet lag disorder in eastbound travel.  This trial was conducted by flying participants from the east coast of the U.S. to Basel, Switzerland, where they were transported directly by bus to a research sleep facility located in France. Private jets were used to provide a proper, controlled research environment. This would not have been possible using regularly scheduled commercial airline flights. Study participants were given either study medication (armodafinil) or a sugar pill (placebo).  This Phase III clinical trial was conducted following the review and approval of the protocol by an institutional review board (also known as an Ethics Committee).  Institutional review boards approve, monitor, and review biomedical and behavioral research, including recruitment activities, with the aim to protect the rights and welfare of the research participants. This study was conducted under an Investigational New Drug (IND) application with the FDA because armodafinil, the study medication, is not approved for the treatment of jet lag disorder or its associated symptoms. Information about the study may be found at the following link:  http://www.cephalon.com/media/ news-releases/by-product/ product/nuvigil/article/ nuvigil-jet-lag-disorder-data- presented-at-the-sleep-2009- 23rd-annual-meeting-of-the- associated-prof/ Editors Note:  This article was updated on 11-03-09 with accurate information provided by Cephalon.
Private Luxury Flights Go “Green” With Avantair thumbnail

Private Luxury Flights Go “Green” With Avantair

(October 22, 2009)

Avantair, Inc. (OTCBB:AAIR), the only publicly traded stand-alone private aircraft operator, attributes its continued growth in an otherwise contracting marketplace to eco-friendly operations and standard-setting aircraft. As the sole North American provider of fractional shares and flight time cards for the Piaggio Avanti, Avantair is a major contributor to recent reports that business aircraft flight activity is at its highest level since last October, according to data released by Aviation Research Group/US (ARG/US). The report states: "Part 135 flying was down just 3.5 percent compared with the same month last year, while fractional activity fell 7.7 percent, ARG/US data shows. However, fractional turboprop flying is up 24.4 percent, thanks to fractional provider Avantair." Avantair is the sole private aircraft operator of multi-engine turboprops, and is the only fractional operator experiencing flight hour growth across all private aircraft categories mentioned in the report. At a time when travelers are evaluating their transportation options, Avantair’s environmentally conscious aircraft and flight programs stimulate owner demand. Avantair’s Piaggio Avanti aircraft feature innovative engineering enabling the lowest fuel burn and carbon emissions in the industry. The aircraft fly at a brisk 450 mph while burning 40 percent less fuel than competitors; this in turn leads to an average of 35 percent less carbon emissions, as well as lower overall costs. The aircraft also feature the same size cabin cross section as a super mid-size aircraft and one of the quietest rides. The advanced design of the Piaggio Avanti lends itself to a spacious, luxurious stand-up cabin — with oversized leather seats and plenty of workspace. Setting the pace towards greener aviation, Avantair was first in the industry to offset aircraft carbon emissions by purchasing Flight TerraPass credits for all new owners. TerraPass works by funding clean energy and greenhouse gas reduction projects throughout the U.S. The TerraPass credits fund three types of carbon emission reduction programs to support: (1) clean energy such as wind; (2) farm power such as dairy farm methane digesters; and (3) landfill gas capture which reduces the impact of human waste. This allows Avantair the unique ability to provide luxurious private jet travel while also maintaining a minimal carbon footprint when compared to competitors. Avantair has offset over 5.8 million lbs. of CO2 on behalf of its owners to date. "At Avantair, we want to take responsibility for changing the conventional aviation practices by offering our customers a fuel-efficient, greener way to travel in comfort and class," said Steven Santo, founder and CEO of Avantair. Avantair recently announced fleet expansion of three Piaggio Avanti II aircraft deliveries, with another delivery to follow this year. Avantair’s fleet growth comes despite an industry downturn of 40 percent fewer jets sold in 2009 to fractional owners, according to "Business Aviation Outlook, Fractional Ownership and Jet Cards" by Rolland Vincent Associates. About Avantair Avantair, the only publicly traded stand-alone private aircraft operator and the sole North American provider of fractional shares, flight time cards and Axis Club Membership in the Piaggio Avanti aircraft, is headquartered in Clearwater, FL, with approximately 450 employees. The Company offers private travel solutions for individuals and businesses traveling within its service area, which includes the continental United States, Canada, the Caribbean and Mexico, at a fraction of the cost of whole aircraft ownership. The Company currently manages a fleet of 55 aircraft, with another 53 Piaggio Avanti aircraft on order through 2013. For more information about Avantair, please visit: www.avantair.com.

(October 22, 2009)

Embraer has signed a contract with German company Aircraft Asset Management AAM GmbH for the sale of two Legacy 650 executive jets. The announcement of the sale took place last Monday during the NBAA’s 62nd Annual Meeting and Convention in Orlando, Florida. The estimated value of the private jets, which are the first Legacy order in Europe, is at $59 million. The aircraft will be maintained by an established private jet operator together with Legacy 600 customer. “We are honored by the acquisition of two Legacy 650s by Aircraft Asset Management AAM GmbH,” commented Luis Carlos Affonso, Embraer Executive VP of Executive Jets. “The aircraft will be operated by DC Aviation, and we are pleased that our newly launched 3,900-nautical-mile-range executive jet has been selected for their business expansion.” This contract marks the second between Embraer and Aircraft Asset Management AAM GmbH. The first Legacy 650 order will be delivered in the fourth quarter of 2010 and the second one will be delivered in 2011. “We are especially proud to be one of the first European charter operators to add two Legacy 650s to our fleet,” said Steffen Fries, Managing Director of Aircraft Asset Management AAM GmbH. “This new variant makes it possible for us to enlarge our long-haul fleet and our international flight services, enabling comfortable, nonstop flights on such popular business routes as London-Dubai or Dubai-Singapore.” He continued: “The performance of the aircraft is very convincing, too. The Legacy 650 is  faster in landing approach than other business jet models and, hence, offers better compatibility with traditional airline traffic. The inclusion of a forward lavatory is also a strong selling point.” Source: Aero News Network
