Affluent British families are booking private jet flights to secure holiday plans. They are doing so to make sure that their plans are not disrupted by British Airways (BA) strikes.
The Air Charter Service (ACS) says that its private jet flight booking have doubled since details of a possible strike were revealed last Monday.
“Within 24 hours of the announcement we had already received our first bookings from disgruntled passengers vowing that the strike would not ruin Christmas for them,” explained Joel Fenn, Executive Jet Sales Director for ACS. “Even though British Airways says that customers are able to change their flights at no charge for later dates, this offers little consolation to families hoping for a Christmas break abroad, or individuals hoping to see loved ones.”
One of the planes that have been chartered since the strike was divulged is a Citation XLS aircraft, which has a 7-10 passenger capacity and a range of 1,500 miles.
The aircraft is commonly used for skiing trips in Europe for the holidays. ACS estimates one trip to cost around £5,300 for the entire plane.
“Chartering aircraft is more expensive than taking a normal plane so it isn’t an option for most people,” said Glen Phillips from the ACS. “However, we are finding that young affluent families who have planned to go skiing are not prepared to wait to find out whether the strike will go ahead.”
As of press time, the union representing BA and Unite are continuing to negotiate.

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger will be flying commercial as he leaves his coveted Gulfstream private jet at home.
The former action star is headed to Denmark, where he will participate in the world climate summit. He is expected to tackle greenhouse gas emissions and how California will promote its reduction.
A spokeswoman for the governor said that he is flying commercially to conserve energy, which is one of his main concerns.
Schwarzenegger has already been criticized for driving around California in a hummer. Using a private jet to fly internationally would further hurt his public image.
A couple of years back, Schwarzenegger had 13 flights using his private jet. This was subjected to public scrutiny. However, members of his entourage say that he paid for those trips by purchasing green credits.

Chapman Freeborn, the global aircraft specialist, has reported higher demand for executive jet and large aircraft charters for Johannesburg and other South African destinations in anticipation of the World Cup.
Demand for these flights is still expected to increase, once the fans know which cities will be hosting their respective teams.
Around 400,000 football fans are expected to arrive in the country for the tournament, giving numerous opportunities for the travel industry.
“We’re receiving charter requests from supporters’ groups, corporate sponsors and media partners as the buildup begins to next summer,” said Lizane Albers-Mostert, business development manager of Chapman Freeborn in South Africa. “South Africa has never staged an international event of this size, so it’s going to be a major test for the country’s aviation infrastructure.”
