Environmental activists protest against the private jet in London Airport

June 18, 2009

Last week, five climate change activists chained themselves to the wheels of a private jet at the London City Airport.

The activists, who wore pinstriped suits and bower hats, said that their actions were a protest against the “selfishness of private jet use.” According to spokeswoman Nancy Birch, “small jets emit five and ten times more carbon per passenger than commercial flights. It’s time they were grounded for good.”

The local police arrested the five individuals on suspicion of aggravated trespass and criminal damage.

According to Flight International, the protest was in vain, because the jet in question had already been grounded due to technical problems.

There was plenty of media coverage. The Daily Telegraph, the London Evening Star, BBC.co.uk, and the Edinburgh Evening News covered the story.
