Bill Clinton and Congress help build back the reputation of the private jet

August 7, 2009

It appears that Bill Clinton has managed to save more than just two journalists. The former president is also helping salvage the image of the private jet.

Last Wednesday, reports said that Hollywood mogul Steve Bing will pat $200,000 to offset the expenses of Clinton’s private jet trip to North Korea. Bing has always been a widely known supporter of Democratic causes. However, he declined to comment on the matter.

Avjet, which was the operator of Clinton’s plane, was quick to build on the event, capitalizing on the exposure it got from the Clinton trip.

The good news is, the Clinton isn’t the only political figure aiding the ailing industry’s public image. Congress has recently agreed to spend $200 million to expand its private jet fleet. And considering its scrutiny of the industry in the past months, this symbolizes a big step forward.

Initially, the Air Force requested one plane worth $65 million. However, the House appropriations committee added another $132 million to the 2010 Defense appropriations bill to purchase two more jets.

Mind you, these are not entry class private jets, they’re G550s—top-of-the-line executive jets.
