The first supersonic private jet

August 14, 2009

Do you think it’s possible to travel from Los Angeles to New York in two hours? Most people would say that the idea is crazy talk. But, in a couple of years it may be possible.

Thanks to the QSST from Supersonic Aerospace International, American businessmen will soon feel the luxury of supersonic travel.

The QSST is a supersonic business jet that is expected to revolutionize the private aviation industry. It will be capable of flying at supersonic speed over populated continental areas.

The Supersonic Aerospace International commissioned Skunk Works for aircraft design and production. Skunk Works is one of the main proponents in aerodynamic advancements that could lead to all aircrafts flying at supersonic speed.

The QSST will travel between Mach 1.6. and Mach 1.8. The maximum cruising speed of this advanced business jet could reach up to 1,188 mph. While it isn’t as fast as the Concorde, its sonic boom is much more quiet.

The SAI said that the sound heard from ground level by a flying QSST is equivalent to a passing car. Skunk Works worked on the plane for six years to develop this sonic-boom technology.

In 2010, the engine of the QSST will be selected from three bidding manufacturers—General Electric, Pratt & Whitney, or Rolls-Royce.
