South African Police purchases very own private jet

November 18, 2009

A correspondence from the Democratic Alliance (DA) parliamentary has revealed that the South African Police Service (SAPS) has purchased a Cessna Citation Sovereign private business jet.

The luxury aircraft will be used to usher cabinet ministers and senior officials around South Africa. However, the purchase of the jet has already resulted in serious problems as there have been complaints. Some are speculating why the government has used such a large amount of money for the plane.

An article from PolitcisWeb says that the plane has been used for the following:
•    Transporting VIP protection service advance teams to countries in Africa;
•    Transporting the task team responsible for the establishment of the DPCI;
•    Transporting top SAPS management to Parliament;
•    Transporting SAPS members with specialised skills to venues during major events;
•    Operational visits to Provinces; and
•    Visits to SAPS deployments in Africa

The money spent on buying the plane and on running costs could have been used for other pressing problems in the country.
