Georgian President orders private jet with one-seat catapult

May 22, 2010

In Russia, the Georgian opposition is accusing President Mikhail Saakashvili of wasting state funds for purchasing a private jet equipped with a one-seat catapult.

“The president once promised to use only common passenger planes. Now he spends enormous funds on his own comfort, although he continues talking about the crisis and the problems of the population,” explained Georgian opposition activist Iosif Shatberashvili.

The President recently purchased a Challenger-type plane for $56 million from state funds. He also ordered to equip his plane with a one-seat catapult, an add-on that was estimated to cost over $6 million.

Shatberashvili explained: “The president was frightened with what happened to late Polish President Lech Kaczynski and decided to have a catapult in his plane. Now he can sleep well.”
