Robert Karlsson paid $11,000 for a private jet to get back to Wentworth, where he struck a course record to share the lead at the European PGA Championship last Saturday.
Karlsson headed back home to Monaco last Friday, thinking that he was already eliminated.
Upon learning that he could still advance to the next round, Karlsson flew to Paris to book a commercial flight to London. However, his scheduled flight was cancelled, forcing him to hire a private jet.
He arrived at Wentworth just two hours before tee off. Karlsson went on to make nine birdies, sending him to the top spot with Luke Donald.
“I was not happy on Friday night,” commented Karlsson. “But I felt as if I had a second chance and I wanted to go out and take it.”
The 40-year-old admitted that he considered withdrawing when he was invited back. But, the status of the tournament prompted him to return quickly.
