Indiana Airports need to extend runways to prepare for growing private jet industry

June 24, 2010

Private jet aviation is forecasted to consistently grow in the next three decades, which will require suburban airports to extend their runways, according to a new study for the Indianapolis Airport Authority.

The consultants from Landrum & Brown say that the runways at Hendricks County Airport and Mount Comfort Airport should be expanded to accommodate more private jets. The study predicts that the number of private jets in the area will increase to 648 by 2040. Last year, there were 420 private jets in the metro.

The study, which will be completed later this year, also says that the cargo volumes of the Indianapolis Airport will increase by 50 percent through the 30 years. This increase is attributed to the consistent growth of FedEx.
