Private jets clog Durban airport and delay World Cup fans

July 9, 2010

Planes headed to the Spain-Germany semi-final suffered prolonged delays at Durban’s King Shaka international airport last Wednesday.

Officials attribute the delays to an increase of private jet flights in the landing slots.

Football fans on two planes missed the match entirely, while fans on three planes missed at least the opening minutes of the match.

Airport operations director Bongani Maseko says around 300 fans were diverted away from the Durban airport and 300 more were affected by the delays, which were also caused by bad weather.

According to FIFA representatives, the football body will study the cases of the fans that missed the game and will compensate them should it be necessary.
