Private jet fiasco over illegal immigrants

January 14, 2011

Five illegal immigrants from Afghanistan and an Italian trafficking suspect were apprehended last Tuesday as the Afghans allegedly tried to leave the country on a private jet.

The incident occurred late Monday when the local authorities discovered that the suspects were about to board a private jet headed for Rome from Ioannina, a northwestern city.

Authorities say that the suspects were carrying false Danish IDs. The two Italian pilots were detained for questioning, while the chartered private jet was impounded.

The police said that 15 Afghans were arrested under similar charges involving an Italy-bound jet in an airport in Greece.
