A private jet owned by a Texas-based company has been impounded for more than two weeks in central Africa, where officials say that the aircraft was used to smuggle gold from rebel territories to eastern provinces. The jet’s passengers and crew members have been detained by the Congolese government.
The private jet was leased by Southlake Aviation, a company based in Dallas-Fort Worth, to a subsidiary of CAMAC International.
The passengers and crew members have been detained since February 3. The plane was impounded by airport authorities in Goma.
According to officials, the private jet was holding about $20 million worth of gold and millions of dollars in cash.
